27th Annual Hudson Valley Golf Classic
On Monday July 25th Easterseals New York held its 27th Annual Hudson Valley Golf Classic at Hollow Brook Golf Club in Cortlandt Manor, NY. The sold-out event provided significant support to nearly 1,000 children in Easter Seals New York preschools, providing them with services that are essential to their growth and development – including class trips, extra staff, vision care, playgrounds, sensory rooms and much more.
Despite the heat and an afternoon thunderstorm, 35 golf foursomes had a great afternoon on the links. Attendees included board members, staff and children from Project Explore at the Valhalla Child Development Center - as well as 48 supporters who are new to the Easterseals New York family! Event sponsor Entergy and gold event sponsor Giordano Builders were well represented among the foursomes.
At dinner, golfers and guests enjoyed award-winning food in the elegant Hollow Brooks banquet hall as awards and prizes were presented.
The highlight of the evening was the poignant speech by Cathy Gutman, whose son Ryan is enrolled at Project Explore. Cathy described the extraordinary services provided by the staff at Project Explore to Ryan, who was born with Prader-Willi syndrome, a rare genetic disorder.
When Ryan first enrolled at Valhalla he was nonverbal. Today, he speaks in complete sentences and “talks up a storm.” His assessments in cognitive, social, emotional and motor functioning have risen significantly, to age-appropriate. Cathy thanked Easter Seals for its great work, and the guests for their generous support. “Ryan’s amazing teachers found a way to overlook his delays and help to unlock his cognitive skills,” she said. “Everybody at Valhalla knows him and loves him, and he has a lot of eyes looking out for him every day.”
